Canada World Youth (CWY) is currently seeking nominations for the 2012 Leadership Awards aimed at recognizing the excellent achievements of young Canadians and youth from around the world that are engaged in innovative initiatives promoting peace, intercultural understanding, and community and international Development. The candidates must be nominated by a third party.

CWY is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of young people that have a desire to become informed and active global citizens. CWY programs are designed to help youth experience the world for themselves, learn about other cultures and diverse Canadian communities while developing leadership and communication skills.

Connect4Climate Photo and Video Competition on Climate Change

Connect4Climate (C4C) is seeking entries for the photo and video competition on climate change focused on African youth aged 13 to 30. To participate in this competition you can send your photos or videos (60 seconds or less) telling a story on climate change or present a cool idea for solutions to climate change issues.

The goal of C4C is to raise awareness about climate change issues around the world, with an initial focus on Africa. C4C, together with its knowledge partners, aims to act as a convener of all parties with an interest in raising awareness about climate change issues and participating in an interactive, global dialogue on climate change. With the help of their broad coalition of partners, both big and small, they are kickstarting an interactive dialogue on climate change issues amongst African youth and global social media users. With roughly 70% of Africa’s total population under 30, the Connect4Climate campaign will tap the rich potential of African’s youth as powerful agents of social change.

Prizes

C4C will be awarding more than 60 prizes, including cameras, mobile phones, computer tablets and solar backpacks. World leaders and prominent climate change thinkers will get a chance to look, listen, and learn about these climate stories generated by African youth from around the continent.

The Zimbabwe International Film Festival Call for Entries

The dates for the Zimbabwe International Film Festival 2011 have changed from the end of August to early September. The new dates are: 30th September to 7th October 2011.

ZIFF is also moving away from screening big International Films to a strong African Cinema focus. This will enable us to contribute towards a wider circulation of African films and enhance the utilization and consumption of African films by Zimbabweans who adore and appreciate good quality African films.

The festival calls for entries from all over the world with a special focus on Africans at home and abroad. Feature, films and documentaries are all welcome. The festival does have a competition component. The deadline for entries is 31 July, 2011. To be eligible the films must have been directed or produced in 2009, 2010 or 2011.

The 9th SIFE Kenya National Business and Entrepreneurship Competition

Date: July 9th 2011

For the last 8 years, Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE Kenya) has mentored over 4,000 university undergraduates on business leadership through community outreach projects and business competition.

One key component of SIFE Kenya activities is an annual business competition that helps identify which university had the highest impact in its outreach projects. The winning university then proceeds for an international business competition – this year, set for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in early October.

2011 UNCA Awards for Best Coverage of the UN

The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) invites media worldwide to submit entries for its 16th Annual UNCA Awards Dinner and Dance for the best written and electronic media coverage of the United Nations, its agencies and field operations.

The prizes amount to over $50,000 with $10,000 each for the main categories.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will present the prizes at the Awards Gala dinner on Wednesday, December 14th 2011 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.

The awards are open to all journalists anywhere in the world.  The Awards are:

  • The Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize, sponsored by the Alexander Bodini Foundation, for written media (including online media) coverage of the UN and its agencies and their work.
  • The Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize for broadcast journalism coverage of the UN, and its agencies, jointly sponsored by the World Council of Peoples for the United Nations and Antena-3 of Spain.
  • The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation/UNCA Global Prize for coverage of Climate Change
  • The United Nations Foundation prize for any entry in any medium that best covers the humanitarian and development aspects of the U.N. and its agencies.

Work in print, Internet, radio or TV between August 2010 and July 2011, covering the UN and its agencies in whatever capacity. The judges will look for entries with impact, insight and originality, and will take into account the courage and assiduity of the journalist. Investigative work is welcome.

Entries not in one of the official languages of the UN should have a translation into English or French, and video entries should be in DVD or VHS (preferably NTSC) format.

A written transcript will assist judging of radio and TV entries. Multiple or joint entries will be accepted.

Berger-Marks Foundation Edna Award

The Washington, D.C.-based Berger-Marks Foundation provides financial assistance to women who are engaged in union organizing and to assist working women who want to organize other women into unions through training, research, and other resources.

The foundation is inviting applications for the Edna Award, a new $10,000 award created to honour a young woman leader in the social justice movement who has made an extraordinary contribution early in her career and whose achievements indicate that her work will continue to significantly improve the lives of working women and men.

Young women from labour unions, women’s groups, workers’ rights groups, and other areas of social justice are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be 35 years of age or younger on December 31st 2011. Women can apply for the award themselves or be nominated by others.
